August 2010

We have been able to spend quite a bit of time on the Lake this summer. Since our friends, Jim and Pam like being on the lake as well they have spent time with us too.

Jim and Pam's daughter and son-in-law came along one day.

Napping is about as exciting as it gets.

Pam called one afternoon to let us know that her two granddaughters, thought it was time for their turn to go to the lake with Grandma.

So we spend an afternoon of giggles, jumping in the water and snack eating.

The floating "noodles" gives the impression that we are being attacked by a squadron of giant water spiders.

Leaping is the best way to enter the water.

After a long period of, leaps, Swim, climb and do it again and again it was snack time.

Another typical August event is the Harris Family reunion. Although the numbers are down a bit those who did attend enjoyed the afternoon together.

Volleyball, which has been the mainstay of reunion activity has now crossed into the next generation.

I heard Brianne say "me and Uncle Jay will stand anybody."

Only Jon and I, of the "older set" were enticed into the completion.

There was serious concentration and sometime good execution.

Some others went for the corn hole toss game.

High text sound reinforcement made sure everyone could hear.
Mom is the last of her generation. She still brings the banana cake.

Most of those who attended spent the afternoon pouring over old family photos

Summer also provide and opportunity for one of my favorite pass times, water skiing. As noted in an earlier post we had a bit of a lull in the action while I tried to get the boat running again, but after spending enough time and money on it, we were back at it.

At the end of August it is sometimes possible to get a ski in after work. On this particular evening we had pretty good water, and remembered to bring a camera to capture some of the action.

In some of these shots you can tell that the sun is getting low in the sky. Soon it will be difficult to get the skiing in before sundown.

The Howett brothers Noel, below, and Nathan, both school teachers, have been pretty faithful in joining me on these adventures. One week in August we skied four days in a row.

Slalom skiing when done correctly involves a rhythm of pulling hard to get from one side of the wake to the other, make a quick turn and pull hard to get back across the wake to make the next turn. Professional run though a course with gate and bouys through and around which the skier is to navigate. The boat is traveling about 36 MPH and the skier is often getting to 50MPH or so. We don't have a course, but we try to simulate the rhythm and have a good time.

Usually when you are in the rhythm you throw up a huge wall of water as you make your turn, sort of parting the water so to speak.

Here is Nathan skiing.

Karen and I went to an art festival in Michigan City one Saturday in Late August and spent a while down near the beach.

We have also been doing quite a bit of bike riding in the evening. Some of the sunset have been quite spectacular.
