Snow Day

Right at the end of January and the beginning of February Karen and were able to get out for a couple of nice walks. Sometimes the weather is not so much fun, but on this particular day the sun was bright even though it was pretty cold and windy.

There is a farm about a mile from our house that has this nice hill with a few nice trees scattered on it close to the road. In the summer it is often covered with cows, but on this day is was just snow.

There is a nice little stream that we cross that is actually one of the many sources that feed into our lake

That evening we did get to see a great sunset over our lake.

On Tuesday evening February 2nd we started getting part of an impressive winter storm that hit most of the Midwest. Snow emergencies were declared in several Counties around us, including Allen County and the City of Fort Wayne. As a result the University was forced to make the decision to close which meant that I would spend the day at home shoveling out. Since I had recently has shoulder surgery I at least tried to take it easy. In the early afternoon I decided to take a walk. Karen was not feeling well so I headed out alone while she took a quick nap. As usual I got carried away and ended up taking the road to Pisgah Marsh a little over two miles from home.

Not many have been down that road recently except a snowmobile within the past day or two.
Since the road has been officially close for several years now it is a pretty lonely road these days.
There is a barricade about a half mile down the road after which there is no opportunity for vehicular traffic and nature is beginning to take over.
At the end of the road the marsh has actually taken over the road. Beavers have built a dam on the down stream side of the road and it is now completely flooded.

Across the marsh is a board walk that is accessible to us only by traveling around to the other end of the abandoned road. Walking in the deep snow was exhausting and when I finally got back up to the plowed road I got a call from Karen scolding me for being gone so long without permission.

We got more new snow on Saturday and this time Karen decided to go with me. It was a bit gloomy and the snow was blowing around a bit.

Evergreen trees out on a low hill in the middle of a field were frosted with the fresh snow.

a lonely bird house.

Except where the plows and tire track were we had about 8" of snow on the flat areas and chest high drifts on the sides of some section of the road.

In the distance is this nice old barn and a farmstead.
Even something as common as a few stalks of fox tail look interesting against the white snow.
