Hunting Rabbits January 2009

Blake, Skyler, Toby (Blake's Dog) and I met one of Blake's co-workers and two of his beagles for our annual rabbit hunt. We have done this hunt once every winter for several years and usually end up with a rabbit or two. This year it was about 12 degrees and a little windy. The farm we hunted has a herd of cayotes on it so the rabbit numbers are down quite a bit and the ones we did see were in a heavy cattail marsh. About all you could see was the tops of the catail reeds wiggling as the dogs chased a rabbit around and around in circles. Pretty smart rabbits, I'd say.
We probably walked more on this hunt than any other we had been on in several years. The places where we had to walk were in fairly heavy cover. I think we were all pretty tired by noon, at least I was. We headed over to Blake and Apryl's for lunch. In the afternoon Blake and I went out in to the woods to cut split and loaded a truck full of fire wood. I think we had the truck about a full as I have ever seen it loaded. By the end of the day I was tired enough that I was able to talk myself out of going out for a run. Oh well, I will call it a cross training day.
