Rome September 8 (part 4)

After leaving the area of Trevi Fountain we headed in the general direction of the Spanish Steps.  Along the way we went by more churches, interesting doors (not your typical Lowe's or Home depot type) and some unusual store displays.

We also saw many more interesting narrow streets/walks.

When we got to the foot of the stairs we noticed that we were not the only ones that thought we should see them or for that matter walk on them.

We got a couple of tourist shots and then suddenly, without warning, some in our small band thought that shopping was next on the agenda.  Jon and I said we will wait here at the foot of the steps.

So we waited

and waited

and waited

and waited

and waited

I finally saw a slight break in the number of people walking up and down the steps and tired of waiting so I thought I could make a quick dash up to the top of the steps and be back before the shopper (who will remain nameless) returned.

There were several flights of stairs with broad landing areas in between each flight.

As I proceeded higher and higher I would turn back and take a shot back toward the plaza at the bottom.

I also tried to take a shot up toward the top.

Each time I got to a new landing I would look back

The higher I got I noticed that the steps below were not visible, so I figured I had better hurry along.

I finally go to the upper plaza and looked out over the city.  St. Peter's Cathedral was quite visible.

I took a few quick shots of the plaza just below me and the street leading out from the bottom of the steps and the church behind me at the very top of the upper plaza and decided to hustle back down to the bottom.

When I got to the bottom the shoppers had just arrived.   I asked if anyone wanted to make the trek to the top again and so Karen Clarice and I headed back up to the top.

This time I was able to get a couple of "we were here" shots.

The lighting was not all that good for portraits but we did get a couple that were okay.

I changed to a telephoto lens and took a couple of detail shot out into the distance and at the bottom of the steps at street level as a close up.

The shot below is from the upper level which is actually a street that head off to the north and south.  We head back to the bottom of the steps, and decided to try to get something to eat.  Our plan was to head back to Trevi Fountain after dark.  We found a nice open air restaurant and had a good meal and a much needed rest.

When we got back to Trevi Fountain the plaza was still packed with people.

We took several pictures and then headed back to the apartment.

Tomorrow we head for the harbor and get onto the ship.
