Australia: Kun-Ring-Gai October 10, 2009

We started the morning from Clarice and Jon’s apartment knowing we might get wet. We had hopes of getting some nice photos of the Palm Beach harbor and lighthouse from across the bay from the lighthouse. We traveled several Kilometers to the Kun-Ring-Gai Park and then 14 Kilometers through the park to the headlands lookout.

When we got there we could tell that it was not exactly sunny, in fact It pretty unpleasant. But being the hardy type and having packed rain jackets we decided to venture forth anyway.
We went out to the lookout point which was straight across from the Palm Beach Lighthouse that we had hikeed to a couple of weeks earlier.
I took some consolation in the fact that I had not paid big money for a plane ride in this soup. It was interesting to see the plane from this perspective knowing we were on a pretty high vantage point.

Not knowing what the weather would bring I took a few shots to capture the size of the harbor, and a few to show the outlook area. I can say that it was not very crowded that day.

Being the “a little rain never hurt anybody type” we stayed put even when it appeared to be getting worse.

Then there was a small hint of the sky brightening so we started looking around a bit.

Karen spotted this kookaburra.

I saw the first sail boat start out of the harbor and spotted this crow.

The sky began to clear a bit more so we hung around a little more, got a “we were there picture” and convinced ourselves that we should start out on a trail down to the beach.

It was an interesting set of descending steps, some rugged some with handrails and everything.

Eventually we got to the beach and decided to spend a little time there since the sky was beginning to clear even more.

We hung out on the beach and climbed around on the rocks for quite a while. I managed to lose my lens cap while I was standing out on the rock on the right. Oh well I have lost lens caps in the Caribbean and at the Great Barrier Reef and now in southern Australia.

More candid and posed group shots.

More sailboats venturing out.

After the unsuccessful attempt at retrieving my lens caps Karen reminded me that I shouldn’t have been out of that rock in the first place

Interesting rock formations

Eventually we had to start back up the hill. I’m not sure Karen is all that thrilled with this next little adventure. For that matter, neither does Clarice.

There were some pretty interesting plant material along the way.

This was a little closer to what we had in mind for site seeing

When we got back to the top is was relatively warm and sunny, great views of the lighthouse the ocean and the harbor.

The Palm Beach lighthouse is over my sholder and off of Karens elbow is a sailboat heading out into the ocean

Jon and I thought that this should be the car we take for a spin back down the winding road to get out of the park. Clarice said we couldn’t.

By the time we got back to the park entrance it was raining hard again. We at least got to enjoy the sun that did show up for a while. We stopped at a small town for lunch and eventually ended up back at their apartment.
Karen and I had to do the final packing for our trip to New Zealand the next morning.
